Chapter 34: Mirror Demon, You Have to Fight Me
by starlightnovelsclubAt night, Ning Shengsheng didn’t dare to close her eyes, her ears pricked up to listen for any sounds outside. She didn’t know when the mirror demon would appear.
She whispered, “System? Are you there?”
There was no sound in her mind. It seemed the system was determined to ignore her.
Since it’s Xue Chen who subdues the mirror demon, she just had to listen for any movements from next door.
Just after midnight, the faint sound of a door opening came from next door. Ning Shengsheng nimbly changed into her night-prowling outfit and put on her carefully crafted facekini.
The offline system, seeing this, wished it could poke its own eyes out. Can its host please not be so bizarre!
Ning Shengsheng had no idea how shocked the system was by her facekini. But what if she did? As long as she found it useful!
She tucked a storage pouch full of magical artifacts into her clothes.
Ning Shengsheng followed Xue Chen from a safe distance. He wasn’t wearing his daytime clothes, but rather a dark, form-fitting outfit with silver cloud patterns embroidered on the cuffs, which faintly glowed in the moonlight.
The vast garden was bustling with servants during the day, but at night, when everyone was asleep, it was eerily quiet. Occasionally, a team of soldiers would patrol by, but otherwise, it was terrifyingly still. The atmosphere was super scary.
Ning Shengsheng followed Xue Chen with extreme caution, not even daring to breathe too loudly. After many twists and turns, she didn’t know where they were going. Finally, the young man stopped in a narrow and cramped path, flanked by a dense bamboo forest. The bamboo leaves were so thick that many of the stalks had grown crooked, their branches and leaves extending over the path, adding a touch of horror to the inky black night, as if ghostly figures from the bamboo forest were waving at them from ahead.
Ning Shengsheng hugged her arms and rubbed them, soothing her goosebumps. What a sin, she thought. She, a person terrified of ghosts, had somehow transmigrated into a xuanhuan world. She cursed herself for not having read a mogul novel before bed. Wouldn’t it be nice to follow a female lead with a mogul system, buying houses and cars, and swiping a black card everywhere all day?
“Still not coming out?”
The young man’s voice was grim and sinister.
Oh no! I’ve been discovered!
Ning Shengsheng, hiding in the back, tensed up. Just as she was about to step out, a black smoke appeared in front of them, quickly gathering and becoming as thick as ink. It formed the shape of a bronze mirror.
“Boy, how did you find me?”
The voice was hoarse and unpleasant. This must be the mirror demon.
Ning Shengsheng’s outstretched left foot was carefully retracted, and she continued to crouch and hide behind the bamboo forest.
“Hmph.”
Xue Chen turned around, his smile extremely cold.
“That pungent smell… it’s hard not to notice.”
The black smoke stirred, and the mirror demon said in surprise, “You… are not human. Interesting.”
Not human? If Xue Chen isn’t human, what is he?
Ning Shengsheng sneakily took out a breath-concealing talisman and slapped it on her forehead, just in case she saw something shocking and couldn’t help but scream.
“Spiritual energy, demonic energy… you have both. If I devour you, my power will double.”
The mirror demon transformed into a huge skeleton and opened its bloody maw, lunging at Xue Chen.
The young man twisted his wrist, and a sword appeared in his hand. The sword was shrouded in demonic energy, and its blade was covered in strange sigils.
Xue Chen held the hilt, the tip of the sword pointed at the mirror demon, a beautiful curve on his thin lips. His beautiful eyes showed no fear, but rather, were filled with excitement and a hint of madness.
“Devour me?”
He thrust his sword out, a wider smile on his face.
“I’m so envious of you. You look so old, yet you’re so ignorant and confident.”
“You—”
The mirror demon was thoroughly enraged. The thick smoke dispersed, transforming into a multitude of monstrous skulls. Countless cultivators’ souls swirled in the pungent smoke, their souls screaming in agony, their faces contorted in the fear they had felt before being devoured.
“I have decided not to kill you, but to torture you mercilessly.”
As he spoke, the black smoke enveloped Xue Chen. Several sword auras shot out from the thick smoke. A few seconds later, the thick smoke dissipated, and Xue Chen had disappeared.
He must have entered an illusion. According to the plot, Xue Chen subdues the mirror demon, which means he overcomes his heart demon and breaks the illusion. Then she had to defeat the mirror demon before Xue Chen did to complete the system’s mission.
“Oh hey!!”
“You little mirror demon, take my whip!”
The mirror demon was just about to fly away when it heard someone’s challenge.
It turned around and saw a strangely dressed girl charging at it, a blue whip in her hand.
A whip made of ice-crystal stone? A good magical artifact. Its huge, lantern-like eyes swept over Ning Shengsheng with a disdainful glance, then it turned and left.
Ning Shengsheng: ?
It’s looking down on her? What’s the meaning of this? Why won’t it even fight her? This is too much!
“Mirror demon! You don’t dare to fight this princess one-on-one? You coward! You’re afraid I’ll beat you to a pulp, aren’t you?”
“Little girl, devouring you won’t do me any good. Get lost.”
“…”
Too condescending. Ning Shengsheng’s heart, which had been seven-tenths full of fear, was now only three-tenths. She raised her whip and charged, screaming, “Let me show you how powerful this princess is!”
The mirror demon’s scarlet eyes rolled.
“Since you’re looking for death, I’ll send you on your way.”
Just as Ning Shengsheng was about to reach the mirror demon, her left foot tripped over her right, and she fell flat on her face.
“Cough—”
“Ugh, so bitter—”
She pulled the weeds out of her mouth.
The mirror demon couldn’t take it anymore.
“A clumsy person like you has no reason to live. I’ll be merciful and grant your wish for death.”
With that, it mercifully dragged Ning Shengsheng into an illusion.
After a dizzying spin, Ning Shengsheng entered a distorted space. When she opened her eyes again, she was in front of a bustling street. The roadside stalls were selling cold noodles, barbecue, roasted gluten, and freshly squeezed juice!
“Oh my god! It’s the night market downstairs from my apartment!”
She was like a cat in a fishpond, diving headfirst into the night market, completely forgetting herself. If she had known the mirror demon’s illusion would have these things, she would have found it long ago!
“Stinky tofu, delicious!”
“Roasted mushrooms, delicious!”
“Boss, a cup of freshly squeezed orange juice, extra ice!”
Ning Shengsheng lingered in the night market of the illusion, reluctant to leave.
Outside, the mirror demon watched with a heavy heart. Why did it feel like this girl was enjoying herself? When others entered the illusion, the things they feared were evil dragons, or being abandoned by their sect, or their cultivation stagnating. Did this girl have nothing to fear? Why did the illusion just conjure up these useless things when she was pulled in?
The mirror demon was furious. It decided to personally control the illusion.
Ning Shengsheng was happily slurping noodles at a street stall when her vision blurred, and she found herself back in her apartment. The TV in the living room was still playing a show to eat to, and the coffee table was set with the takeout she had just ordered.
It was fried chicken and mala tang!
Ning Shengsheng’s eyes lit up, and she began to eat from her bowl. The main character in the show was being ridiculous, and she clutched her stomach, laughing.
The mirror demon was going crazy. What is in this girl’s head?! Why could it only conjure up these useless things based on her state of mind?
I don’t believe it.
The mirror demon put all its effort into it, even neglecting to torture Xue Chen on the other side.
Finally!
It was ecstatic!
Hahahahahaha!
It had finally found something the little girl was afraid of.
“So you were abandoned by your own parents, little girl. Don’t blame me for being cruel. Who told you to be so annoying!”
